FAQs
What actually makes Great Erie different from a bank?
Great question! The biggest difference is that we're a member-owned, not-for-profit credit union, not a bank. That means no shareholders, no investors, and no pressure to put profits first. Everything we do is designed to benefit you — the people who bank here.
What does it mean to be a “member-owner”?
When you join Great Erie, you're not just opening an account — you're becoming an owner. You get a say in how we operate, and your membership helps us keep improving for everyone. It's banking with a built-in community.
Can anyone join Great Erie?
Membership is available to those who live, work (or regularly conduct business in), worship, or attend school in Erie County, New York. Businesses and other legal entities located in Erie County may also become members.
As part of the merger with IRS Buffalo Federal Credit Union, membership is also open to federal government civil service employees and retirees, along with immediate family or household members, located within the Western New York region, defined by the following counties:
• Erie County, NY • Niagara County, NY • Chautauqua County, NY • Cattaraugus County, NY • Wyoming County, NY • Orleans County, NY
Is my money safe here?
Absolutely. Your deposits are insured by the NCUA up to at least $250,000 — just like FDIC insurance at a bank. You can relax knowing your money is protected.
Why are credit union rates usually better?
Because we're not-for-profit! Instead of sending profits to shareholders, we put them right back into things that help our members:
• Better rates • Fewer fees • More support
It really is that simple.
Do you offer the same services a bank does?
Yes! From everyday checking and savings to loans, online banking, mobile app tools, and more — we've got everything you'd expect from a bank, just with friendlier service and local decision-making.
How does Great Erie give back to the community?
When you bank here, your money stays right in Western New York. We support local families, small businesses, schools, nonprofits, and community programs. It's all part of our “people helping people” philosophy.
I'd like to switch… but is it a hassle?
Not at all. We'll walk you through the whole process — moving direct deposit, transferring payments, all of it. Most people tell us it was way easier than they expected.
What do you mean by “Save More, Stress Less”?
It's our way of saying we're here to make your financial life easier. With fewer fees and competitive rates, we help you keep more money in your pocket and worry a whole lot less.
